Defense modifier is a status present on most weapons around Unline.

Your character total defense is based on the [[Gear|shield]] you are wearing or, if you're not wearing a [[Gear|shield]], by the [[Gear|weapon]] defense. 
If you're wearing a shield while you're wearing a weapon, the weapon defense will be ignored, it doesn't matter if the weapon defense is higher or lower than the shield defense.

== Example ==
Imagine you're a [[Vocations|gladiator]] wearing a [[Swords|Pharaoh Sword]] (Atk:49; Def:36 +2) and a [[Shields|Beginner Shield]] (Def:15).

Beginner Shield defense is 15.
Pharaoh Sword defense is 36 with a +2 modifier.

Remember the main rule: since you're wearing a shield, your weapon defense will be ignored, but his modifier won't.

With this "combo", your character total defense will be 17 (15 from the shield, and 2 from the weapon defense modifier). 
If you aren't wearing a shield but only the sword, your character total defense will be 36.

"So, by wearing a shield, on these conditions, my character will be weaker?"

Correct! In these conditions, you will have more defense by only wearing the weapon. On the other hand (literally), you won't raise your shielding skill.

If you were wearing a Mastermind Shield (Def:37) instead, your total defense would be 39 (37 from the shield, and 2 from the weapon defense modifier).
